The banking industry plays a fundamental role in the economic development of every country by facilitating financial intermediation between depositors and investors. Commercial banks operate through extensive domestic and international branches and subsidiaries, making them essential institutions for allocating financial resources across the economy. Their ability to generate sustainable profits while effectively managing risks is critical to maintaining financial stability and supporting economic growth. Consequently, effective credit risk management has become one of the most important determinants of commercial bank profitability.

This research is organized into five chapters, with each chapter addressing a specific stage of the research process. Chapter One introduces the research topic, presents the background of the study, identifies the research problem, explains the research gap, and outlines the research objectives that guide the investigation.

Theoretical Foundations of Credit Risk Management and Bank Profitability

Chapter Two presents the theoretical framework supporting the study by reviewing the major theories relating to risk management and bank performance. The chapter also evaluates empirical studies conducted both in Nepal and internationally to establish the existing body of knowledge. The literature review discusses concepts including commercial bank profitability, indicators of financial performance, return on assets, return on equity, credit risk, credit risk management, risk management practices, and performance measurement indicators. This chapter provides the conceptual foundation necessary for understanding the relationship between credit risk management and profitability.

Research Design and Data Collection Procedures

Chapter Three explains the research methodology adopted for the study. The research employs a quantitative research design using a descriptive approach to examine the relationship between credit risk management and commercial bank profitability. The study relies exclusively on secondary data collected from credible financial reports, published financial statements, regulatory publications, and other reliable institutional sources. The chapter justifies the use of secondary data, identifies the data sources, explains the procedures used to ensure data quality and reliability, and outlines the statistical techniques that will be applied during data analysis.

Presentation and Interpretation of Empirical Findings

Chapter Four presents and discusses the empirical findings generated from the statistical analysis. The chapter begins with an introduction to the analytical procedures, followed by stationarity testing, pooled regression analysis, panel data analysis, and interpretation of the statistical results. The discussion evaluates how the findings relate to the research objectives and compares them with previous empirical studies.

Research Conclusions and Practical Recommendations

Chapter Five summarizes the major findings of the study and presents the overall conclusions regarding the impact of credit risk management on the profitability of commercial banks. The chapter also provides practical recommendations for banking institutions and policymakers aimed at improving credit risk management practices and enhancing financial performance. Finally, the chapter identifies limitations of the study and proposes areas for future research that may contribute to a broader understanding of risk management within the banking sector.
